Friday Informal Seminar Hour (FISH) - Donald Paul, USC

Date:
Friday, April 8, 2016 - 12:00 to 13:00

"Cyber-Physical Security for Oil and Gas Operations" | The seminar discusses the multi-dimensional aspects of cyber-physical security for critical oil and gas operations. The exponential growth in cyber-originated attacks threaten the operational performance, safety, and environmental integrity of these Critical Infrastructures. We will discuss key technology and operational trends, such as the growth of sensor systems and oilfield automation in the "digital oilfield", as they expand the scope and nature of the cyber threatscape and add complexity to defense systems. In addition, the massive societal infusion of digital technology (and the corresponding cyber-security risks) creates an integral behavioral and organizational dimension to the development of effective security systems and processes. Technology trends have convinced some experts that "the game has changed" for cyber-security - and we'll discuss the arguments. While the presentation will focus on oil and gas infrastructures, many of the features discussed are also applicable to the electric power system and its evolution into the "smart grid".
