MIT Atmospheric Science Seminar (MASS) - Isaac Held, Princeton

Date:
Monday, May 9, 2016 - 12:00 to 13:00

"Some problems in quasi-geostrophic dynamics"
I will review some problems in QG theory that I feel are interesting but have not been able to make much progress on over the years. Topics covered will likely include the following: barotropic instability of zonally asymmetric flow and the PNA pattern; baroclinic wave packets; and several issues related to homogeneous turbulent models of baroclinic heat fluxes. | The MIT Atmospheric Science Seminar Series [MASS] is a student-run weekly seminar series. Topics include all research concerning the atmosphere and climate, but also talks about e.g. societal impacts of climatic processes. The seminars usually take place on Mondays in 54-915 from 12.00-1pm unless otherwise noted (term-time only). Talks are generally followed by a lunch with graduate students. Besides the seminar, individual meetings with professors, postdocs, and students are arranged. The seminar series is run by graduate students and is intended mainly for students to interact with individuals outside the department, but faculty and postdocs certainly participate. 2015/2016 co-ordinators: Marianna Linz (mlinz@mit.edu) and John Agard (jvagard@mit.edu). mass@mit.edu reaches the list.
