PAOC Colloquium - Paul Wennberg (Caltech)

Date:
Monday, September 24, 2018 - 12:00

Speaker: Paul Wennberg , Professor of Atmospheric Chemistry and Environmental Science and Engineering, California Institute of Technology

TitleThe Carbon Cycle Observed from Space: Measurements of Carbon Dioxide and Chlorophyll Fluorescence from the Orbiting Carbon Observatory - 2.

Abstract: Near InfraRed spectra of reflected sunlight are used to map the distribution of carbon dioxide and chlorophyll fluorescence.  The measurements of CO2 are evaluated against ground-based remote sensing measurements to tie the space based observations to the broader effort to describe the global patterns of CO2.  These patterns are used to diagnose the sources and sinks of CO2.  We are using these observations to evaluate anthropogenic emissions of CO2 from East Asia and to study the role of temperature (climate) on high latitude forests.

About this Series

The PAOC Colloquium is a weekly interdisciplinary seminar series that brings together the whole PAOC community. Seminar topics include all research concerning the physics, chemistry, and biology of the atmospheres, oceans and climate, but also talks about e.g. societal impacts of climatic processes. The seminars generally take place on Monday from 12-1pm. Lunch is provided to encourage students and post-docs to meet with the speaker. Besides the seminar and lunch, individual meetings with professors, post-docs, and students are arranged.
